چکیده

Introduction I is a well known fact that the ingestion of an optimum amount of lluoride during the developmental period of the crowns of the teeth renders them more resistant to caries. It is possible that other trace elements may also assist in reducing the incidence of the disease: for example, by influencing the solubility of the calci fied dental tissues, by producing changes in the morphology of the teeth or by altering the crystallinity of the enamel'. Before the function of various elements in teeth can be fully explained or the changes that occur in their distribution in pathological states can be interpreted, their normal distribution must be deter mined. Thus the methods adopted for the quantitative analysis of the elements in teeth arc continually being improved. Of the recently developed techniques, neutron activation analysis, because of its high degree of sensitivity, enables the presence of the major and minor mineral constituents of teeth to be revealed. The principles involved in activation analysis in general and neutron activation analysis in particular were discussed in a recent paper1. The distinctive features of neutron activation analysis may be applied to de termine the various elements in biological materials; the inherently high sensitivity of this technique makes it suitable for the detection of mere traces of elements. Previously Nal (Tl) scintillation counters were used and lengthy radio chemical separations were-necessary prior to the determination of one or more components in an irradiated sample3. With the development of high resolution

The quantitative analysis of Sr, Au, Br, Mn and Na in normal human enamel and dentine by neutron activation and high resolution gamma spectrometry.

T concentrations of some of the elements in normal human enamel and dentine that give rise to short-lived radioisotopes, Ca, Na, Al, Mg and Cl, were determined by means of instrumen tal activation analysis and the results reported in a previous paper (Retief et al, 1970). Subsequently the concentrations of some of the elements that give rise to long-lived radioisotopes, Cr, Ba, Sb, Ag, Zn, Co ...

Chemical composition of human enamel and dentin

The theoretical or practical dosimetry involving radiation interactions in humans needs the reliable elemental composition data of body tissues. The object of this research was to obtain the characterization dental hard tissues and to determine its effective atomic number. An analytical research of inorganic composition, from 30 intact human molars, extracted for periodontal reasons, was perfor...

Instrumental neutron activation analysis of air suspended particles in Rasht city, Iran

Background: In addition to gas pollutants, many chemicals and air pollutants are in the form of particulate matter. Particulate matter consists of a complex mixture of variable sized particles and physicochemical composition. These particles mainly contain minerals including Fe, Al, Ca, K, Cu, Ti, Mn, Ni, V and their size, chemical composition and concentration are important to assess ...

The mineral composition of enamel from two South African population groups.

The mineral composition of pooled bulk enamelfrom Black and White South Africans respectively, resident in the Johannesburg area, was determined by neutron activation analysis and high resolution gamma spectrometry. The dif ferences between the concentrations o f Ca. C l, Mg. Na, Br and Co in the enamel of the two population groups were ap parently not significant. There was a trend for the c...
